Ross peered in through the window of the restaurant. There was no sign of Joel inside yet, but then again, Ross had arrived early. He’d been for a walk up and down the length of the street, gazing at all the shop windows, before returning to the restaurant. The place looked nice enough: nearly all the tables were full, which was always a good sign, and every time someone entered or exited, the aromas that wafted through that door were wonderful. He’d already read the menu displayed in the window three times, and knew what he was going to order, just in case time was a factor.

All of which only served to prove to Ross what he already knew—he was nervous. As for why? That was down to one thing.

He had no clue as to Joel’s motivation for inviting him.

Was it a date, or just a convenient place to eat? Was Joel thinking romantically or practically?

Ross knew what he wanted the situation to be, but that didn’t mean for a second that he was going to get it. Oh, he’d recognized the danger signs already. Joel was gorgeous, intelligent, and a dream between the sheets—not that they’d managed to have sex anywhere near sheets yet—and Ross was trying very hard not to think about the ‘I’m definitely straight’ part. But the truth was, Ross knew he could fall so easily for him, and his track record in such circumstances wasn’t good. He had to face reality: even though Joel seemed more than happy to have sex with him, that didn’t mean for one nanosecond that he’d be equally happy to carry on a relationship with him.

Things like that just didn’t happen.

“Hi.” Joel was strolling along the street toward him, dressed in black jeans, a crisp black shirt, and matching jacket. Ross stifled the urge to drool, because Oh My God—Joel in black was sexy as sin.

“You look nice.” No sooner had Ross said the words out loud than he winced internally. Nice? What kind of a compliment is that? Your grandmother’s hat is nice, a flower arrangement is nice—but the guy you could so easily fall for if you didn’t watch what you were doing? You could have chosen something more original, for God’s sake.

Thankfully, Joel apparently didn’t view the adjective with the same degree of horror. He smiled. “Thanks.” He gestured to Ross’s hair. “Do you only wear it down when you’re on stage?”

The unexpected question halted him in his tracks. “Er, usually. I do wear it down sometimes.”

Joel’s smile hadn’t faltered. “Then would you wear it down this evening?”

And just like that, Ross was tossed once again into a conflicted mess. Why does he want to see me with my hair down? Does he think I look better? Sexier?

He didn’t know what to think anymore. That didn’t stop him from removing the band that held his bun in place. Ross shook his hair free, using his fingers to make it lie flat.

Joel sighed. “Yup. My sister would kill for that hair.
